6 Tips for First-Time Cannabis Smokers

Smoking Cannabis for the first time is almost a rite of passage. Nearly everyone in this day and age has tried smoking cannabis at least one time in their lives. That first smoke session can be a beautiful experience, much like meeting an old friend for the first time in years. However, your first time may also take a negative turn. Although every first-time smoker is different, many often struggle with head-change, anxiety, paranoia, or their current social environment. “Fresh-heads,” as they’re called in some circles, are known to “geek,” or crack up, and freak out. Don’t put out that blunt just yet, young grass-smokers. With the right guidance, anyone can have an awesome first time smoking cannabis. The following are 6 tips for budding cannabis smokers.

1. Inhale, and hold it as long as you can.
Many smokers look back on their first times only to realize they didn’t actually get high. If truly experiencing cannabis is your goal, make sure you’re smoking right. Be sure to inhale. A common mistake in first-time cannabis smokers is “hot-boxing.” No, they don’t enclose themselves in a closet or vehicle, I’m talking about taking in smoke without inhaling it. You won’t get anything from smoking cannabis unless you inhale. When I started smoking, everyone told me to hold in my hit as long as I could, without hurting myself, of course. Although there may not be any solid, concrete evidence that this action holds any benefit, it might be worth a try.

2. Bring drinks and snacks.

Never underestimate the power of cottonmouth or the infamous munchies, especially if you aren’t used to dealing with those sorts of things. While smoking cannabis, users often experience dry-mouth and a sometimes insatiable appetite for snacks and junk food. Bring plenty for you and your smoking circle. Sharing is caring, after all.

3. Take a nap.

If laziness just won’t stop tugging at you and your eyes droop lower and lower after every hit, don’t be ashamed to tap out. If you’re in a comfortable place with nice people, try to take a nap. There is nothing like getting baked and taking a nice, long nap!

4. Don’t start with an edible.

Cannabis in edibles is notorious for knocking even seasoned smokers on the floor. The high induced by an edible infused with cannabis may be a bit too much for a first-time smoker. Instead, stick with more tried and true means of consumption. You can never go wrong with a nicely rolled joint!

5. Smoke with good friends.

To prevent paranoia, and negative vibes, make sure your first time is with friends you trust. Smoking with people with whom you are comfortable to be yourself around is key when it comes to sharing cannabis. Your first time should be with pleasant people you can laugh around. The ultimate goal of smoking cannabis together is to experience shared positivity, right?

6. Smoke More!

In my own personal experience, whether I was freaking out or becoming paranoid, smoking more cannabis always calmed me down. It may seem counterproductive, but it always works. Cannabis itself isn’t always the cause of negative feelings while high, although at times it may seem that way. More often than not, our issues come from within ourselves. Smoking more cannabis has yet to fail in clearing my head of hindering negativity and bringing me back to reality. Plus, you can never overdose on cannabis. When in doubt, just smoke more!
