About Lewis Wind Power
Lewis Wind Power Limited was established specifically to develop the Lewis Wind Farm proposal. The combined strengths and expertise of AMEC and British Energy Renewables have been brought together to develop this project in this 50/50 joint venture.
AMEC has a substantial track record in both onshore and offshore wind farm development.
British Energy Group plc is Scotland's largest electricity generator, producing over 40% of Scotland's electricity and some 20% of the UK's electricity.
The combination of AMEC and British Energy brings a wealth of experience relevant to the development, design, construction, operation, energy trading and decommissioning of this proposed major wind farm development.
Lewis Wind Power has set the following objectives for the proposal:
- to deliver a commercially viable wind farm
- to provide justification for the investment in a large efficient grid inter-connector to the Western Isles with spare capacity for other renewable projects
- to make a major contribution to Scottish and UK renewable energy targets
- to make a major contribution to the economy of the Western Isles
These objectives are consistent with those of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (The Western Isles Council) and its Community Planning Partners.
The proposed Lewis Wind Farm could contribute an equivalent of approximately 6% of the UK's 2010 renewable energy target and over 36% of the Scottish Executive's target of the same year.
